Week 1- Blade Runner

Today we watched the movie Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford as the main character. It takes place in Las Angeles in the year 2019 so it's full of science fiction. I'm guessing that the original story includes more details on how the environment is supposed to be at this time on Earth because there are no plants or trees and everything seems overly polluted and artificial which brings me to the lighting of the movie. Every single scene was lighted artificially. There was never a bright moment of true light, like the sun radiates, because the fog was so dense even when it was daylight it was gloomy. The artificial lights included bulbs, neon lights, moving white rays, headlights, and even tv screens. The only moment when true light was used was in Torell's bedroom which was lit with hundreds of candles, fire, and even then it wasn't very bright. It was always raining which intensified the gloom and the characters were always dirty except for Rachel. I think that's why the audience felt a subconscious attraction to her. Not only was she beautiful but her face was always so clear and flawless. Anyway back to light. Even though the gloom made me feel claustrophobic and cold, I think it was appropriate because with artificial intelligence comes artificial light.
